The University of the Azores is a public institution of higher education that reports to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education. It was established in 1976 with the aim of promoting the sustainable development of the archipelago. It currently has some 5,997 students, 453 teachers and 235 employees. Universidad de los Azores has a tripolar structure, with centers in the cities of Ponta Delgada (São Miguel), Angra do heroísmo (Terceira) and Horta (Faial). The University of the Azores is organized by a logic of the departments and schools, mainly aimed at education and research.
